CASE TYPE GUIDELINES:
Provide financial and legal counseling to financially distressed farmers who meet Indiana statutory eligibility guidelines.
Who is considered eligible for the Project’s services?

A farmer who meets both of the following definitions:

(A)     Farmer:
A farmer who is the owner or operator of a farm who is engaged in the production of crops and livestock on the farm real estate and derives at least twenty-five percent (25%) in gross income from the sale of farm products.

(B)    Financially troubled farmer:
A farmer who within each of the last six (6) months:

(a) Has debts that exceed forty percent (40%) of the gross value of the farmer’s farming operation; and
(b) Has experience a negative cash flow related to the farmer’s farming operation that jeopardizes the continuance of the farming operation; or

A farmer who is the borrower under a loan that the borrower does not have the financial capacity to pay according to its terms and that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics:

(a) The borrower is demonstrating adverse financial and repayment trends.
(b) The loan is delinquent or past due under the terms of the loan contract.
(c) One or both of the characteristics set forth in clauses A and B, together with inadequate collateralization, present a high probability of loss to the lender.

Operate as a referral service to benefit farmers
Teach six to ten Financial Management and Recordkeeping Seminars; as a USDA-approved Borrower Training Agency.

AREAS SERVED:

This project provides conflict resolution services through mediation. Because of our funding, our free services are limited to low and moderate income residents in the City of Mishawaka and City of South Bend. Residents outside of boundaries are charged a modest sliding scale fee. Mediation is a creative, innovative way of problem-solving. It is voluntary and confidential; mediations sessions are held in Neighborhood Partnership Centers, NMP office or other neutral sites. We also offer mediation skills training to residents interested in becoming volunteer mediators.
